Arusha to Serengeti: drive times, gates & permits

Drive time: Allow roughly 7–9 hours from Arusha car rental pickup to central Serengeti (Seronera) with normal stops — longer via Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Most guests split the journey over two days (Arusha → Karatu → Serengeti).

Main gates: Naabi Hill (classic eastern entry), Ndutu (south / migration calving), Kleins and others depending on your route. Confirm your gate matches your TANAPA permit and itinerary.

Permits: Serengeti is TANAPA — park fees are paid at entry (separate from vehicle rental). See our Serengeti & Ngorongoro permits guide for fee types and paperwork. If you transit Ngorongoro, NCAA conservation fees apply separately.

Vehicle: High-clearance Land Cruiser rental with pop-up roof or rooftop tent for multi-night loops. Get a Serengeti 4×4 quote.

Combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Northern Circuit overland routes on a 7–10 day self-drive loop from Arusha.

Serengeti self-drive FAQ

Can I self-drive in Serengeti National Park?
Yes, with a hired 4×4 and valid TANAPA park permits. A high-clearance Land Cruiser is recommended for all-weather tracks. We brief you on gate times and route planning from Arusha or JRO.

Plan 7–9 hours to Seronera with stops, or split over two days via Karatu. Gate choice (Naabi Hill, Ndutu, etc.) and Ngorongoro transit affect total time.

Naabi Hill suits most eastern Serengeti routes. Ndutu is popular for southern plains and calving season. Match your gate to your permit and overnight camps — we help at handover.
Dry season (June–October) offers easier roads and concentrated wildlife. Green season (March–May, November) can be quieter with lower rates — allow flexible daily distances.

Most self-drive guests spend 3–5 nights inside or near the park, often combined with Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire on a Northern Circuit loop.
